This Halloween wool wall hanging–say that 10 times fast, is a Sew Cherished brand kit! It includes the pattern and the wool fabric. This kit is often used as a oval table mat, or set inside an oval tray. I decided to JAZZ mine up a bit, and turn it into a wall hanging! I used scraps from the back to make straps for hanging, and a stick from my front yard to hang it from–adding an extra funky detail.
HANGING WITH THE FAM
My aunts are great! They set this whole thing up!!! We had a little gathering where all my cousins and I got together to learn how to make this beautiful Trick or Treat wall hanging. Learning as a group is always more fun! And of course, it is always great to spend time with family!
WOOL IS THE NEW TREND
This was my first embroidery project! I had also never used wool. Wool is a trend right now with quilting. Check out these beautiful Halloween quilt blocks my Great Aunt is piecing together (See More Photos Below). I just love the look of wool!
BASIC SUPPLIES
You’re going to need wool thread, embroidery needles, as well as a good pair of tiny scissors. These scissors are awesome, and fairly cheap. I purchased them directly off this site HERE.
TRACING SUPPLIES
To trace our design, we used lighted boxes–not necessary, but if you plan on doing lots of appliqué, they are certainly helpful. We traced our designs directly onto freezer paper, and cut out the design. Then we ironed the freezer paper directly to the wool. It lightly sticks to the surface making it easy to cut out. Also, don’t forget to use iron on backing as well so that your design sticks in place before you stitch around the edges.
MY NEW FAVORITE STITCH
This stitch is called an open square stitch! It’s my new favorite embroidery stitch and such a beautiful detail. Not only did I use this stitch on this “Trick or Treat” wall hanging, but I also used it as a detail on the back of my zipper for this dress project HERE. This stitch could be added to any outfit–around the sleeves of an old shirt or dress, or even on a new embroidery project. It’s such a beautiful detail.
